It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Kenneth "Ken" Gordon Batty, beloved father, grandfather and friend who left us peacefully on June 18, 2025, in Crowsnest Pass, Alberta, at the age of 77. Born on February 17, 1948, in Calgary, Alberta, Ken lived a life full of adventure, passion, and a deep commitment to his family and community.
Ken's heart always belonged to the outdoors. Whether skiing down a mountain, kayaking across peaceful waters, hiking through rugged trails, or camping beneath the stars, he embraced nature with joy and reverence. He also cherished spending time with his family, always eager to cheer on his grandchildren, Ayla, Jackson, Kaia, Thurston, and Owen. He was their biggest supporter, ready to celebrate every milestone, no matter how big or small.
Ken’s career was as diverse as his passions. He began as a lifeguard and camp director, roles that showcased his natural leadership and desire to help others. He later owned and operated a family services agency in southern Alberta, working with children and families, including the Piikani and Kainai Nations. Throughout his career, Ken focused on youth and family services, helping countless young people overcome challenges and reach their potential. He was deeply committed to mentorship and believed in the power of connection. Ken’s greatest hope was to make a difference in people’s lives—and for many, he did so immeasurably. His entrepreneurial spirit also led him to run a café, where he combined his love of food and community. Even after “retirement,” he remained active and engaged, always staying connected to the world around him by continuing his work with youth as an educational assistant in several Vancouver schools. In this role, he built many strong relationships with staff and students, always finding joy in helping others grow. Known for his dedication and sense of humor, Ken became a beloved figure at the schools where he worked. One of his trademarks was his steadfast commitment to wearing shorts for as many days of the year as possible, no matter the weather.
His commitment to community and service included his long-standing involvement with Toastmasters International. As a dedicated member, mentor, and leader, Ken spent many years helping others develop their public speaking and leadership skills, leaving a lasting impact on the organization and the people he mentored.
Beyond his professional and outdoor pursuits, Ken had a deep love for food, especially baked goods. He was a passionate baker, always perfecting recipes for delicious treats that he generously shared with others. His signature creations became a source of joy for family, friends, and anyone lucky enough to sample them. Whether it was rum soaked fruitcakes, muffins, or cinnamon buns, Ken loved to share his baking.
In addition to being an engaged and doting Grampa, Ken had a special bond with his grandogs, often playing endless games of fetch that brought him as much happiness as any outdoor adventure.
Ken is survived by his children, Alex (Wendy) Batty, Brielle (Kevin) Batty Smith, and Cameron (Amanda) Batty; his grandchildren, Ayla, Jackson, Kaia, Thurston, and Owen; his long-time friend and brother-in-spirit, Murray Armstrong (Linda Gonnet); and many extended family members, friends, and colleagues who cherished him. He was predeceased by his parents, Alfred and Mary Batty, and his brothers, William and Brian.
Ken was so grateful for the excellent care he received, and his family wishes to express deep gratitude to the staff at Lionsgate Hospital, the Crowsnest Pass Health Centre, South-Zone Palliative Care Team, the BC Cancer Centre and the Arthur JE Child Cancer Centre, and to the many people who offered their support and companionship in Ken’s final days.
A celebration of Ken’s life will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, August 9, 2025 at the Polish Hall (1406 - 82 St., Coleman, AB)
In lieu of flowers, donations in Ken’s honour can be made to Backpack Buddies (www.backpackbuddies.ca) or the Canadian Cancer Society (www.cancer.ca). Condolences may be registered at www.fantinsfuneralchapel.ca.
Ken’s legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched, the relationships he built, and the joy he found in the simple moments of life. Though he is no longer with us, his spirit of adventure, kindness, and ability to connect with people will be missed by all who knew him.
