It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Raymond William Schaap of Coleman, Alberta. On February 18, 2016, Ray was called to be with the Lord while receiving care at the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary after 81 years of a full life.
Ray was born on December 21, 1934 in Nievweschoot, Netherlands to proud parents Wiebren and Fim Schaap. He grew up to be a brave, dashing young man who joined the Canadian Army to protect his fellow countrymen. He was released from service on September 23,1954. On May 5, 1962, Ray married his soul mate, Mona Yagos, and they were later blessed with a loving family of their own. In his free time, Ray enjoyed camping, curling, playing pool and crib. He was an active and proud member of the Coleman branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, as well as being involved with the Masons and Elks. Ray will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
He is survived by his son, Howard (Ryan) Schaap of Brooks; his grandchildren, Natasha (John) Haluck, Frank Houda, Gregory Schaap, Kimberly Schaap, Taylor Schaap and Derek Schaap; his great grandchildren, Rylan Carter Haluck and Serenity Haluck; his brother Henry (Mary) Schaap; his sister, Ann Larue; extended family and the many friends that he made throughout his life.
He was predeceased by his parents, Wiebren and Fim Schaap; his loving wife, Mona Schaap; his beloved daughter, Patricia Schaap; his brothers, Gus Schaap and Howard Schaap; and his sister, Margaret Schaap.
The Funeral Service will be held at Fantin's Funeral Chapel in Blairmore, AB on Friday, February 26, 2016 at 11:00 am with Rev. Renso Castellarin officiating.
