In Loving Memory of
Pollyanna Snowdon (1923 – 2012)
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Mrs. Pollyanna Snowdon on September 30, 2012, in the Crowsnest Pass Health Centre at the age of 89 years.
Pollyanna was born on March 15, 1923, in Coleman, Alberta, to Thomas and Lena Gushul, and it was in the beautiful Crowsnest Pass that she chose to remain for the rest of her life. She grew up in a talented family with her brother and two sisters surrounded by music and photography. Here too, she met the man whom she would marry in 1941, Kenneth Snowdon, and would be further blessed with three children of her own.
First and foremost, Pollyanna was a lady who lived for her family and gave of herself without reservation. She was remarkably generous, courageous, considerate and “kind to a fault.” Her concern for others gave her the amazing inner strength needed for herself and her husband to continue living in their Coleman home late into their senior years.
Polly played an active part in the Ukrainian cultural group in the Crowsnest Pass as a young girl. She was an accomplished pianist and loved playing. She enjoyed playing bingo and was an avid fan of stock-car racing. She loved gardening and her huge poinsettia was her pride and joy. Polly suffered many medical challenges in her life but her determined nature helped her work through them.
Pollyanna will be sadly missed by her sons, Darryl (Judi) Snowdon of Lundbreck, Kenneth Snowdon, Jr. of Pincher Creek, and daughter, Diane Hakze of Bellevue; her grandchildren Jennifer Hakze, Sandy Hakze, and Mark Hakze; great-grandson Tony Hakze and her brother Evan Gushul of Lethbridge. She was predeceased by her parents and by her sisters, Paraska (“Pat”) Nelson and Nadia Rose.
In keeping with Pollyanna’s wishes, a funeral service in her memory will not be held. However, donations will be gratefully accepted in her memory by the S.P.C.A., at Box 2647, Pincher Creek, AB, T0K 1W0, or by the S.P.C.A. in the Crowsnest Pass, at Box 725, Blairmore, AB, T0K 0E0.
