It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Myrtle Schopff who at the age of 78 years was called home to be with the Lord on July 25, 2014 while receiving care at the Crowsnest Pass Health Care Centre.
Myrtle Jean Hendrickson was born on April 8, 1936 in Calgary, Alberta to Gib & Margaret Hendrickson. Her childhood was full of challenges and adversity. After the death of her father and the burden to raise the family thrust upon her mother, Myrtle and some of her siblings were entrusted to an orphanage. She appreciated the care given and learned determination and resilience. She blossomed into a lovely young lady who was further blessed with a family of her own.
Always hard working and gracious, Myrtle found her talent with food to be her calling. She was employed as a cook and baked extraordinary character cakes for birthday parties and other special occasions. One food outlet even named their famous pie after her – “Myrtle’s Lemon Pie”. She loved food and its preparation and eventually joined every weight watchers organization around. She was crowned Queen of the Calorie Counters program and reigned with her charismatic and humorous character. She also loved to knit afghan quilts, crochet, needlepoint, camping and bingo. Her loving heart made her the first choice as the neighborhood babysitter and the many friends she made throughout her life can attest to her beauty inside and out. May she be at peace with the Lord and her memory live for eternity.
She is survived by her son, David Schopff of Holden, AB; her siblings, Norm (Marilyn) Hendrickson of Parksville, BC, Elsie Lishness of Maryland, USA and Lloyd (Carol) Hendrickson of Coleman, AB; her step-sister, Doreen Hewitt of Hornsby Island, BC; her best friends, Heather Young and Wendy Fuchs; as well as her extended family and numerous friends.
She was predeceased by her precious infant daughter, Theresa Schopff; her former husband, Dave Schopff; and her parents and siblings.
The Memorial Service honouring Myrtle’s life will be held on Friday, August 1, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Fantin's Funeral Chapel in Blairmore. Rev. Nicky Keyworth officiated.
