It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mr. Mike Zinook of Coleman, Alberta who died on May 27, 2013 at the age of 73 years while receiving compassionate care at the Crowsnest Pass Health Centre.
Mike was born on July 2, 1939 in Coleman to proud parents, George and Blanche Zinook. He was an active and talented child with many endearing qualities. At an early age, Mike contracted an illness that left him hearing and speech impaired. Communication was more than difficult and he was institutionalized for a brief time but he was blessed with an opportunity to be able to study Sign Language. Because the Pass did not have many people who understood this form of communication, Mike was inclined to simplify his gestures and become content with just the basic necessities. He found great pleasure working at Chris’ Restaurant, riding his bicycle, gardening, decorating his home during the holidays, the kindness and caring of his family, and most especially fishing. Mike was one of the finest fisherman in this community and most often shared his catch with friends and family. His generosity and the twinkle in his eye when he smiled will be a treasured memory to us all. He joins his beloved mother in the promise of eternal life and happiness; may he find peace and comfort beside still waters with his fishing rod in hand.
Mike is survived by his siblings, Josephine (Ralph), Adela (Kent) and Georgina (Jack); numerous nieces and nephews; extended family and friends.
He was predeceased by his father, George Zinook; his mother, Blanche Zinook (nee: Setla); and his sister, Irene Sikora (nee: Zinook).
A Memorial Ceremony celebrating Mike’s life will be held on Saturday, June 15, 2013 at 2:30 pm at Fantin's Funeral Chapel in Blairmore (13461-20th Ave). Cremation occurred at Fantin's Funeral Chapel’s private crematorium.
The family is grateful for the compassion and care provided by the doctors and nurses at the Crowsnest Pass Hospital. Donations in memory of the late Mike Zinook may be directed towards the CNP Health Foundation, Bag 1, Blairmore, AB T0K 0E0. Condolences may be registered at www.fantinsfuneralchapel.ca.
