It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Lawrence Jack Rosia, beloved husband of Bessie Rosia of Bellevue, Alberta. He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and fireman who, at the age of 87 years, succumbed to illness on April 11, 2015 while receiving care at the Crowsnest Pass Continuing Care Centre.
“Lolly” was born on July 13, 1927 in Bellevue, Alberta to parents Stefano and Pasqua Rosia. With the early passing of his father, Lolly had to provide and accept more responsibilities for his family than other children his age. His fortitude, humble work ethic and dedication made him the man whom we all admired and loved.
Lolly proudly joined the local volunteer fire department and used his talents to learn the intricate rules and knowledge required with this hazardous and time consuming role. He mentored and inspired many members and became the oldest volunteer member in Canada with almost seventy years of service. He extinguished many fires in his day but the one that he could never quench was the flame he carried for his beloved wife, Bessie whom he courted and married on November 19, 1949 in Coleman. He was blessed with three sons and later watched his family grow.
Lolly had many talents including woodworking and was instrumental in developing and maintaining the Bellevue Fireman’s Park and the former Bellevue Arena but he lived for his family and was an exceptional husband, father and grandfather. He provided for them while working at the Horace Allen School as a custodian and bus driver. He enjoyed working beside the youth of our community and took an active leadership role in various activities such as hockey and baseball. His greatest passion was spending time with his family whether it be fishing, hunting, hockey or all helping to clean the school, he was happiest just being with them. The wisdom he gained throughout his lifetime confirmed that family should always be first in one’s life followed by faith and community. He firmly believed that whatever you do, do it well, and above all else, let those you love know they are loved by what you say and what you do. May we keep his memory in our hearts forever.
He is survived by his wife, Bessie Rosia (nee: Poch) of Bellevue, AB; his three sons, Dr. Larry (Carol) Rosia of Calgary, AB, Wayne (Sherri) Rosia of Cochrane, AB and Gene (Juanita) Rosia of Black Diamond, AB; his grandchildren, Tony Rosia, Lorne Rosia, Lisa (Brett) Barrett, Kyle Filyk, Erin Filyk, Tanner Rosia, Nick Rosia, Amanda (Willy Brown) Baglot, Steven (Melissa) Rosia and Annie Rosia; his great grandchildren, Taylor and Sydney Barrett; numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws and extended family; as well as the many friends and colleagues he made throughout his lifetime.
He was predeceased by his parents, Stefano & Pasqua Rosia; his grandchild, Ryan Baglot; his sisters, Ella Barnett and Enis Kapalka; several in-laws and dear family members and friends.
The Funeral Service will be held on Friday, April 17, 2015 at 11:00 am at the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Blairmore (13126-21st Ave) with Rev. Renso Castellarin officiating.
