It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Gordon Makin of Hillcrest Mines, AB, who on September 25, 2014 at the Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge, AB, succumbed to his illness at the age of 75 years.
Gordon was born on August 9, 1939 in Hillcrest Mines, AB to proud parents, John and Catherine Makin. Along with his siblings, he was raised with a strong appreciation for family and community. Gordon grew into a kind and capable young man and when he met Jean Pierzchala, he knew he had found the love of his life. They were married on July 14, 1962 and were later blessed with a wonderful family of their own.
Gordon loved the great outdoors. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, camping and hiking with Jean and their beloved dog, K.G. He never missed a chance to cheer on “his” Calgary Flames and was a huge baseball fan, both as a spectator and a participant. Gordon was also keenly interested in his family’s history as well as the history of the Hillcrest Mines community.
Above all else, Gordon treasured his family. He made a point never to miss any of his grandkids’ activities and his famous spaghetti sauce was highly favoured by them whenever they were at Grandad and Gramma’s for supper. It was simply the best! Gordon was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. His love and wisdom will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jean Makin of Hillcrest Mines, AB; his sons, Mark (Sharlayne) Makin of Lethbridge, AB, Mike (Darcy) Makin of Hillcrest Mines, AB and Joel (Laura) Makin of Lethbridge, AB; his daughter, Merri Ann (David) Wall of Hillcrest Mines, AB; his grandchildren, Taylor, Mitchell, Abbi, Jordan, Josh, Desmond, Zachary and Ethan; his sisters, Margaret Ann (Tom) Woodward of Hillcrest Mines, AB and Kathleen Makin of Grande Prairie, AB; his brother, Roy (Shanna) Makin of Brooks, AB; his sister-in-law, Fran (Doug Martell) Dougherty of Thedford, ON; numerous nieces and nephews; and the many friends he made throughout his life.
He was predeceased by his parents, Catherine and John Makin.
The Memorial Service was held on Thursday, October 2, 2014 at 1:00 pm at Fantin's Funeral Chapel in Blairmore, AB with Ron Schultz officiating. Interment followed at the Hillcrest Cemetery with his family present. The reception was held at the Hillcrest Fish & Game Hall, hosted by the Hillcrest ladies with food donations from the Coleman Christian Assembly as well as other friends and family.
