Having recently celebrated her 101 birthday, Ella Frieda Braun of the Crowsnest Pass passed away on October 12, 2014 at the Continuing Care Centre. She was one of the oldest residents of the Pass and greatly respected and admired.
Ella was born on September 26, 1913 in Prenzlau, Germany to Karl and Anna Hopp. Her childhood was a happy one and she grew to be a lovely young lady. She married and began her family. Times changed drastically during the War and Ella’s life was changed to one of hardship upon the passing of her husband. She remarried a caring and devoted man, Arthur William Braun in February of 1944. They immigrated to Canada on May 15, 1955 arriving in Quebec and for a short period, lived in Lethbridge, Alberta and finally settled in Coleman, Alberta in May of 1968. Ella loved the rugged beauty of the Pass with its majestic mountains and friendly people. While Arthur toiled in the local sawmill, Ella cared for her family and their home.
Ella was a proud member of the Royal Purple and Coleman Legion. She volunteered many hours to the Women’s Resource Centre and Seniors’ Association. She was energetic and compassionate, a wonderful role model and someone you could depend on but most of all, she was a lovely lady who adored her family and inspired us all to appreciate the moments of kindness freely given to us all. May she rest in the peace of our Lord.
She is survived by her children: Christine LaPorte, Joe (Giesela) Nehyba and Vera Braun; her grandchildren: Jim Braun and Patrick LaPorte; her great grandchildren: Shauna LaPorte, Shannon LaPorte, George Nehyaba, George Braun and Susan Braun; as well as her extended family members here in Canada and in Germany.
By request of the family, no funeral services will be held. Donations in memory of the late Ella Braun may be directed to the CNP Health Fdn, Bag 1, Blairmore, AB T0K 0E0.
