ADELE JOANN SALOFF
(1934 – 2015)
On the 21st day of March 2015, our beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Adele Joann Saloff passed away from an aggressive form of lung cancer. She was 81 years old.
Adele had many roles during her life; first, a farm-girl in Saskatchewan, who had to work very hard from a young age to help her parents, Alex and Eva Backlur; then, trying to find herself, she travelled throughout Canada doing odd jobs. During this time, she arrived in Calgary where she met Marish (aka: Barney) Saloff. They married in January 1956 and had their first child, Terry by the end of that year. Their son, Larry joined the family in 1958 and son, Garry in 1963. After some bad luck in Calgary, the family moved to the Crowsnest Pass in 1968 and their youngest son, Perry was born there in 1969.
It was in the Crowsnest Pass where Adele finally found herself. She enjoyed many activities the area had to offer, volunteered for various clubs and functions and made many friends and memories along the way. Some of her most treasured memories included climbing the Crowsnest Mountain, being a St. Johns’ Ambulance attendant for the 1988 Calgary Olympics torch run, being a member of the Coleman Seniors Drop-In Centre and assisting in the renovations of the hall, but most of all, she cherished becoming a grandmother in 1990 when her beloved grandson, Alexander, was born. Adele loved children and they could always find comfort in her arms. She was known as the best baker in the neighborhood so they could count on her for delicious cookies and cupcakes as well!
Adele was a kind and nurturing person who touched many lives. She will be fondly remembered and dearly missed.
She is survived by her sons, Terry Saloff of Coleman, Larry Saloff of Coleman, Garry (Mary) Saloff of Lethbridge, AB and Perry Saloff of Lethbridge, AB; her grandson, Alex Saloff of Lethbrdge, AB; her sisters, Alvina (Bill) House of Creston, BC and Roni (Andy) Chuta of Calgary, AB; her sister-in-law, Joanne Backlur of Yorkton, SK; as well as the many friends she made throughout her life.
She was predeceased by her husband, Marish (aka: Barney) Saloff; her parents, Alex & Eva Backlur; and her brother, Ambrose Backlur.
In keeping with Adele’s final wishes, no funeral services will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations will be gratefully accepted by the Coleman Seniors Drop In Centre (P.O. Box 175, Coleman, AB T0K 0M0) or the Canadian Diabetes Association (204, 2323 – 32 Ave. NE, Calgary, AB T2E 6Z3). Condolences may be registered at www.fantinsfuneralchapel.ca.
