Peter Cousins Obituary

It is with very heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Peter Cousins, on April 14, 2025.

Peter is survived by his brother, Joseph (Anne); sisters, Agnes and Ella; his nephew, Gavin: his nieces, Eloise, Joanne and Chelsea; great-nephew, Aaron; his great-nieces, Mia and Orla; as well as his extended family, Ginger, Trevor, Alan and Thomas.

Peter was predeceased by his parents, Ethel and Peter; sister, Margaret; and brother-in-law, Tom.

Peter was born on November 8, 1947, in Bridge of Allen Stirlingshire, Scotland, the second oldest of five children. Peter joined the Scottish army at the age of sixteen with the permission of his mom and dad and was enlisted at Dundee in the Corps for Highland Brigade. He was given the title of Corporal Cousins.  While in the army, Peter performed clerical duties and received a Certificate of Service with Exemplary Military Conduct. He was on the verge of being promoted into the Sergeants Mess. He stayed in the army for fourteen years, from 1963 to 1977, until his father fell ill, and he retired to look after his family. Peter then worked at Rexco, a smokeless fuel plant, where his dad had also worked. He remained there until the plant had closed and he made arrangements to come out to Canada.

Peter emigrated the Crowsnest Pass, AB in 1989 with his mother, Ethel. He lived with his sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Tom McPherson, until he found a wee tiny rental home of his own. Peter started employment with Cherokee Sports as a bicycle repairman and worked there for several years. He then took a job with Blairmore Allied Hardware and remained with them until his retirement. Peter made many friends while working at Allied. He always greeted his customers with the biggest smile and treated everyone like he had known them a lifetime.  Peter bought his first home in Blairmore, and that was a very proud and accomplished thing for him. Peter transformed his yard into a little oasis consisting of a very large garden, a workshop, and a beautiful deck where he liked to relax in the evenings by the fire with a glass of beer and Clamato and listening to his favorite music. When Peter’s sister Margaret passed away, Peter moved into her home in Hillcrest, AB and did a full home renovation. He had a knack for carpentry and spent a lot of time perfecting his home. Peter was always available to help his friends whenever they needed him. We will always remember him with a great deal of love and respect for the person he was and will remember his Scottish accent and quirky sayings.

A Graveside Service will be held at the Hillcrest Union Cemetery, Hillcrest, AB on Thursday April 24, 2025 at 1:00pm. All friends are welcome.  Condolences may be registered at www.fantinsfuneralchapel.ca.
