Marjorie “Marge” Houda passed away peacefully at the age of 92. A lifelong resident of the Crowsnest Pass area, Marge was truly a “Bellevue Belle” — a woman whose life was deeply rooted in family, community, and quiet dedication to others.
Born in Nanton, Alberta, Marge moved with her family to Bellevue at the age of ten, a place she would proudly call home for the remainder of her life. From an early age, Bellevue shaped who she was, and in turn, she helped shape the community around her. Her father worked as a school bus driver at Archibald’s Garage, and in the local dairy industry. Instilling in Marge the values of hard work and service that guided her throughout her life.
At just ten years old, Marge met Frank Houda, the first boy she ever knew — and the man she would later marry and build a life with. Together, they raised a family and shared a deep bond built on love, partnership, and shared passions. Frank and Marge enjoyed hunting, fishing, dancing, and spending time outdoors, often traveling throughout southern Alberta to enjoy weekend dances with friends.
Marge attended Maple Leaf School before later joining Bellevue School. She worked many jobs over the years, balancing employment with raising her children. Known for her strong work ethic, she never asked for work — employers sought her out. Her working life included positions at Johnson and Cousin Mercantile, Thompson’s Store, Mickey Finn Pharmacy in Blairmore, the Bellevue municipal office, and in banking, later transferring to Blairmore when the Bellevue branch closed.
Community involvement was central to Marge’s life. She served on the Maple View Hall committee, helping restore the hall into a vital community space. She was instrumental in establishing the Bellevue Library, initially operating out of an old school office using donated books and a catalogue system she helped create.
In her later years, Marge remained active and engaged. She bowled with the Bellevue Crows senior team, winning league championships and advancing to provincial competitions. She also participated in numerous community organizations, including the Bellevue Ladies Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion, Citizens on Patrol, York Creek Lodge, Crowsnest Pass Hospital Auxiliary, and the Bellevue Seniors, where she once served as treasurer, following in her mother’s footsteps.
When not dedicating her being to helping others or spending time with her family, you could find Marge tucked deeply away in her well-tended to beautiful garden of varying colors, or taking evening gallivants into nature for pictures she would share with everyone.
Marge is lovingly remembered by her last surviving son, Randy (Annette) Houda; her cherished grandchildren Nathan (Jennifer) Lapointe (Houda), Natasha Haluck (Houda), Frank Houda, Nicole Houda and Conrad Houda; and her significantly loved great- grandchildren Rylan, Serenity, Gauge, Saige and Jordyn. Additionally, she is survived by many extended family members and friends.
Marge is predeceased by her late husband Frank Houda; her sons Francis and Michael Houda; and former daughters-in-law Murielle Carlson and Patricia Schaap.
Marge found happiness in simple routines, familiar faces, and meaningful service. Her life was a testament to loyalty, resilience, and community spirit. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew her.
