Doreen Van Egmond Obituary

Doreen May Van Egmond (Née: Biefus) passed away peacefully on July 1, 2025 at the Crowsnest Pass Continuing Care Centre, Blairmore, AB.  She was 80 years of age.

Born on October 21, 1944, in Wetaskiwin, AB, Doreen was the beloved daughter of Rudolph and Esther Biefus and sister to Norman and Lorne.  Her early years were spent in Wetaskiwin, where she began her working life at a trailer plant. Later, she remained close to her family and devoted time to crafts, knitting, and needlework—talents she cherished throughout her life. Her creative spirit and warm heart made her a joy to be around.  Over the years, Doreen was a devout member of the Salvation Army and it remained near and dear to her heart throughout her entire life.

While living in Leduc, AB, Doreen met John Van Egmond through a connection made at the Edmonton newspaper. The two married and began a journey together that took them across Western Canada. They owned a bake shop in Wetaskiwin before moving to Coleman, AB; then Winnipeg, MB; and eventually Regina, SK. It was in Regina that John sadly passed away.

Following John’s passing, Doreen made her home in Blairmore, AB, where she built a close-knit community of friends. Known for her gentle nature, easygoing personality, and gift for making others feel welcome, she quickly became a cherished part of the town.

A skilled baker and cake decorator, Doreen brought beauty and sweetness into the lives of many through her creations. She also loved colouring, which brought her both relaxation and joy, and was an avid baseball fan – the Toronto Blue Jays being her team of choice.  Doreen will be remembered for her kindness, creativity, and the quiet strength with which she lived her life. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Left to mourn her passing and celebrate her life is her sister-in-law, Ruth Biefus; two nephews; two nieces; and special friends, Tina Wilhelm, Anna McNeil and Rita McNeil.  She was predeceased by her husband, John Van Egmond; her parents, Rudolph and Esther Biefus; her brothers, Norman and Lorne; and her dear friend, Armie McNeil.

A Private Graveside Service will be held.  Condolences may be registered at www.fantinsfuneralchapel.ca.
