Carmela Ianni-Lucio Obituary

“ Le sue mani gentili ora riposano pacificamente.

Possa lei continuare a guidare I suoi figli mentre è con il Signore “

On July 18th, 2019, at the precious age of 85 years, Carmela Ianni-Lucio (née: Vercillo) was called to be with the Lord, passing very peacefully surrounded by her family.

Carmela was born on February 22nd, 1934, in Aiello Calabro Consenza Italy, to parents Antonia & Antonio Vercillo.  Being the oldest daughter and second born, she spent her childhood helping her mom raise her five siblings, tending their family owned fruit and vegetable farm, and cooking household meals, which started a lifestyle she continued to live by.  She valued family, hard work, and dedication to the Lord.

In 1958, Carmela immigrated to Canada moving to Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, where she was blessed with her first two children, Sam and Dino.  In 1966, Carmela then moved to Manitoba where she was blessed with her third child Erminia (Mina).  After moving her family to Italy in 1971, Carmela worked in agricultural fields harvesting produce for nine years. Carmela then decided to move her family back to Canada in 1980 to reside in the Crowsnest Pass. To provide for her family she worked at many local restaurants, cleaning homes, and babysitting local children.

Carmela’s greatest joy in life was to be surrounded by her family.  She played a big role in raising, teaching, mentoring, and loving each and every family member.  She will be remembered for her homemade Italian cooking, her hard work and dedication to her family, her nurturing heart and daily phone calls, and her unconditional love and affection.

Carmela cared so deeply for her family, but also her friends and neighbours.  She enjoyed providing comfort and care to anyone who was apart of her life.  Whether she was caring for neighbouring homes, taking care of the children who resided around her, she did so with loving care as she would with her own home and or children.  She enjoyed spending the hot summer months gardening fresh vegetables and finding creative ways to appreciate the deer but to also deter them away from eating her flowers.  Up until her final year, close neighbours will remember her by politely refusing their help in clearing snow, as she always tried to find ways to exercise in the winter.

She is survived by her children, Sam Ianni-Lucio (Cynthia), Dino Ianni-Lucio, and Mina Nigro (Saverio); her grandchildren, Vanessa Ianni-Lucio (Jonathan), and Madilynn Cederberg-Ianni (Marc); her great grandchildren, Mason and Sadie; her siblings Lina and Gioconda (Giuseppe); her sister-in-law Ermelinda; her precious Pomeranian, Spike; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

She is predeceased by her parents, Antonio & Antonia Vercillo; her siblings, Leonardo, Ida, and Adamo; her sister-in-law, Domenica; and her brothers-in-law, Gilberto and Franceseco; and her beloved Pomeranians, Gizmo and Mickey.

With respect for Carmela’s wishes, a private family service was held at the Fantin’s Funeral Chapel with Fr, Angelo D’Costa officiating.  Donations in memory of Carmela Ianni-Lucio will be gratefully accepted the Crowsnest Pass Health Foundation (Box 455, Blairmore AB T0K 0E0).
