Welcome to the memorial page for

Rudolph "Rudy" John Szymanek

May 2, 1922 ~ July 10, 2016 (age 94) 94 Years Old

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Rudy Szymanek of Coleman, AB, on July 10, 2016 at Carewest Sarcee in Calgary, AB.  He was blessed with 94 years of life.

Rudy was born on May 2, 1922 in Evergreen, AB to proud parents Michael and Sophia Szymanek.  He grew into a fine young man whose sense of duty prompted him to enlist in the Canadian Army.  He proudly served his country from 1942 to 1945.  It was also during this period that Rudy married the love of his life.  On August 31, 1943, he and Elizabeth “Betty” Krywolt were joined in holy matrimony, and in 1945 the couple relocated to the Crowsnest Pass where they raised two wonderful sons and created countless happy memories.

Rudy was a multitalented individual who served the community in many capacities between 1946 and 1986, culminating with his position as Assistant Superintendant of the Municipality of Crowsnest Pass.  In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening, bowling, making wine, trips to Radium and Fairmont Hot Springs, watching hockey, as well as being a member of the local Elks Club.  Above all else, Rudy cherished his family and friends, and welcomed any opportunity to spend time with them.  His kind, generous spirit and twinkling eyes will be dearly missed and always remembered by everyone who knew him.

Left to mourn his passing and celebrate his life are his sons, Al (Dianne Abrams) Szymanek and Rudy (Sharon) Szymanek of Calgary, AB; his grandchildren, Kristi (Michael), Kevin (Kara), Kelsey, David (Gabriela), Jeff, and Thomas (Meredith); his step-grandchildren, Jenn (Daryn) and Bonnie (Colin); his great grandchildren, Abbey, Aiden, Karter, Kody, Vincent, Donovan, Tristan and Leighton; his step-great grandchildren, Tyler and Curtis; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family; as well as many friends.

He was predeceased by his wife, Betty Szymanek; his parents, Michael and Sophia; his daughter-in-law, Judy Szymanek (née: Roughead); his brother, Mike (Emily) and Joe (Helen); his sisters, Sophie (Henry) Weigand and Mary (Bill) Lipka; and his in-laws, Mary (Adam) Morris, Violet (Dante) Filafilo, Edward (Margaret) Krywolt and Aloise (Margaret) Krywolt.

Rudy’s family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff of the York Creek Lodge, Crowsnest Pass Health Care Centre, Carewest Sarcee and the Rockyview and Foothills Hospitals for the compassionate care that their father received from them, and a special thank you to Donald and Irene Filafilo and Nick Olynyk for their special companionship.

With respect for Rudy’s wishes, a private gathering will be held at a later date.  Memorial donations will be gratefully accepted by the York Creek Lodge Residents’ Association (P. O. Box 1050, Blairmore, AB T0K 0E0).  Condolences may be registered at www.fantinsfuneralchapel.ca.
