Welcome to the memorial page for

Margaret Hardie (Sutherland) Duff

October 18, 1936 ~ November 3, 2016 (age 80) 80 Years Old

Mrs. Margaret Hardie Duff of Blairmore, Alberta passed away peacefully in slumber on November 3, 2016 at the glorious age of 80 years.  She was a charismatic and wonderful lady who will be fondly remembered for her feisty nature and never give up attitude – she will be dearly missed.

She was born on October 18, 1936 in Steelend, Fife, Scotland to proud parents, Thomas and Margaret Sutherland.  From humble beginnings, Margaret experienced many childhood joys and overcame many trials of that time of war and economic depression.  She learned to appreciate all that she had rather than yearn for what she had not.  As she blossomed into a lovely and charming young lass, she won the heart of a fine young gentleman, John Duff.  They were married on March 29, 1958 and began a family of their own.  They immigrated to Quebec, Canada in 1966 for a brief period and once more in 1971 to finally settle in the Crowsnest Pass, Alberta.  Margaret was a devoted wife and loving mother who enjoyed caring for her home and family.  She found employment as a retail clerk in the local grocery store and pharmacy.  In her spare moments, Margaret enjoyed visits to Scotland, adventurous road trips within Canada and exciting vacations in Vegas.  She was an avid reader, devoted hockey fan (especially for the Edmonton Oilers) and always had a great love for animals but her greatest joys came from times spent with her family.  Her recent family reunion last Thanksgiving filled her heart with gladness and gave true meaning to the holiday.  Her battles with illness and pain are no more and she may now rest in peace.

Left to celebrate her memory include her children, Kim (Glen) Girhiny of Coleman, Stuart (Sheri Rosler) Duff of Blairmore and Scott (Cara Phillips) Duff of Hillcrest; her grandchildren, Sean Girhiny of Whitehorse, Caitlin Girhiny of Edmonton, Amy Duff of Calmar, Amanda Duff of Leduc, Rhylee Duff of Hillcrest and Payton Duff of Hillcrest; her great grandchildren, Daeghan Feniuck of Calgary and Ava Kutz of Calmar; her siblings, Ena Lawrie of Scotland, Bill Sutherland of England, George “Dod” (Maureen) Sutherland of Scotland, Jean (Paul) Mandzuik of Ontario, David (Morag) Sutherland of England and Robert (Mary) Sutherland of Scotland; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and her sister-in-law, Bunty Smith of Scotland.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, John Duff; her parents, Thomas and Margaret Sutherland; and her brother Thomas Sutherland Jr.

With respect for Margaret’s wishes, no funeral services shall be held.

Donations in memory may be directed towards the CNP ASPCA Humane Society, PO Box 725, Blairmore, AB T0K 0E0.  Condolences may be registered at www.fantinsfuneralchapel.ca.
