It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Leona Marie Smith, beloved wife of James Henry Smith of Lethbridge, Alberta, who succumbed to her illness on October 18, 2016 while receiving care at the Chinook Regional Hospital. Leona was graced with 78 years of life.
Born on July 11, 1938 in Crysler, Ontario to parents, William and Blanche Perras, Leona and her numerous siblings were raised with an appreciation for family, faith and community. Shortly after highschool, Leona married a charismatic and handsome young man, John Armstrong, and the two were blessed with a family of their own. Leona adored her children and sacrificed all she had to provide for their needs. She worked as a cashier, store clerk, landscaper, waitress and bartender. She was modest and loyal with incredible patience and unconditional love. She experienced great joy and accomplishments as well as trials and tribulations within her lifetime. After her divorce, she married a fine gentleman, James Smith, and she was once more blessed with a large family to care for. Leona’s life centered around precious moments spent with family; especially during Christmas and other holiday gatherings.
Leona was an amazing cook, loved all animals, gardening, long strolls outdoors, moonlight ski doo trips with her children, hunting and conversations with her cherished grandchildren. Her positive attitude and generous heart will be dearly missed but always fondly remembered.
She is survived by her husband, Jim Smith of Lethbridge; her children, Dwayne Armstrong of Lethbridge, Neil (Robyn) Armstrong of Calgary, Stanley (Lynne) Armstrong of Fernie, Anthony (Debbie) Armstrong of Red Deer, Loretta (Robert) Nicholson of Bellevue, Cory (Cathy) Smith and Darren (Bonnie) Smith; her grandchildren, Shannon (Chris) Johnston, Jesse (Hon) Armstrong, Ryan (Laurelle) Armstrong, Heidi (Dwayne) Schaaf, Teri (Nathan LaFontaine) Reil, Shaun (Alisha) Reil, Eric Armstrong, Leah (Tyler) Casey, Shawna Nicholson, Ryan Nicholson, Taylor Boyse, Cole & Kendra Smith, Tristan, Michaela, Cheyenne, Jesse, Joel, Patrick and Nathan; her great grandchildren, Seth, Loren, Cruz, Kash, Kellen, Matana, Josiah, Sawyer, Fynn, Max, Coralynn, Tristan, Kaylen and Brayden; her brothers, Morris (Donna) Perras, Roger Perras, Jerry (Judy) Perras, Ray (Shirley) Perras and Oreal (Renee) Perras; her sister, Jean Perras; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
The Visitation allowing us to say farewell will be held on Monday, October 24, 2016 at 1:00 pm at Fantin's Funeral Chapel in Blairmore (13461-20th Ave). Cremation to follow.
The Memorial Service will be on Tuesday, October 25, 2016 at 2:00 pm at Fantin's Funeral Chapel with family member Pastor Dwayne Schaaf officiating. The reception was graciously held at the Coleman Legion.
