With heavy hearts, we announce the sudden passing of our dear Father and Grandfather, Kazimierz Farfus, on March 2, 2017. He was 88 years of age.
Affectionately known as “Grandpa Kaz,” Kazimierz (Kaz) was born in Zawoda, Poland, in 1928. He met his wife of 67 years, Maria, in Germany and they were joined in holy matrimony in 1949. Together with their families, Kaz and Maria immigrated to Canada in 1950, where they had a contract to work on a sugar beet farm in the Lethbridge area. Two years later, they moved to Bellevue, Alberta, where they established their permanent home and raised their three sons.
During his career, Kaz worked at the Burmis Sawmill and a number of mines throughout the Crowsnest Pass area, including the Bellevue Underground Mine. The work was hard, but he greeted each day with gratitude, a positive attitude and tenacity. He retired in the early 1990s.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Kaz’s family meant everything to him. Whether he was helping Maria in the kitchen, lending a hand to his sons, or playing with his grandchildren, his love for his family was always felt.
Kaz was an active member of the Catholic Church throughout his life. He truly was a man who built his house on the rock and his faith carried him and his family through both good times and hard times.
For five generations and more than 60 years, the Farfus Home was the place where family and friends gathered. With a warm smile and a twinkle in his eye, Kaz would welcome you and tell you a story as Maria prepared a delicious meal.
You could often find Kaz in his garden, digging in the soil, planting, watering, and tending to his vegetables. It was a labour of love, and when you visited he was proud to show you what he had grown and share his harvest with you. He enjoyed spending time outside and tinkering in the garage. He was resourceful and inventive, and could build or fix practically anything. He was always excited to go ice fishing, help with a renovation or a project, or attend events for his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Kaz had a gentle spirit and a generous heart. He was patient. He was kind. He was the person you turned to for advice and someone you could always count on.
The world is a different place without him.
Left to mourn Kaz’s passing and celebrate his life are his loving sons, Walter (Judy) Farfus of Blairmore, AB, George Farfus of Lethbridge, AB, and Richard (Rosalie) Farfus of Coleman, AB; his cherished grandchildren, Alesha (Sheldon), Amanda (Dave), Jennifer (Bobby), Dustin, Emma and Allison; his treasured great grandchildren, Spencer, Bensyn, Noah, Mataya and Molly; his extended family and the countless friends he made throughout his life.
He was predeceased by his wife, Maria (Reder) Farfus; his parents, Leon and Albina Farfus; his sister, Gabriella (Steve) Proc; his brother-in-law Roman Reder; and his daughter-in-law, Lori Farfus.
Although we are deeply saddened by his passing, we are grateful to have had Grandpa Kaz in our lives, and are comforted in knowing he and Grandma Mary are together again in the loving arms of our Father.
With respect for Kaz’s wishes, no funeral service will be held. In lieu of flowers, charitable donations can be made in his memory. Condolences may be registered at www.fantinsfuneralchapel.ca.
